The Government of Aragon has launched a grant program with a total of 22.2 million euros for the modernization of irrigation systems in the region, framed within the Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP 2023-2027). This initiative aims to promote water and energy efficiency in the agricultural sector, encouraging more sustainable and competitive practices.
Boosting Water and Energy Efficiency
The call for proposals, managed by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food, primarily aims to finance projects that improve water management and energy efficiency in irrigation infrastructure. These actions are crucial for progressing toward a more sustainable agricultural model in Aragon, aligned with European sustainability guidelines.
The grants are divided into two main lines. The first focuses on the comprehensive modernization of irrigation systems, transforming traditional systems into more efficient pressurized systems. The second line is dedicated to improving existing irrigation systems through investments in technologies that reduce water and energy consumption, such as piping and advanced control systems.
Beneficiaries and Selection Procedure
The irrigation communities are the exclusive recipients of these grants. The allocation of subsidies will be conducted under a competitive process, ensuring transparency and objectivity in the selection of projects. This approach allows resources to be directed toward initiatives that demonstrate the greatest impact and feasibility.
The funding comes from both the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Government of Aragon, reflecting a joint commitment to promoting rural development and sustainability in the region.
