IAACC Pablo Serrano is hosting Gabinete. Archivo Antonio Fernández Molina through January 10, 2027, an exhibition bringing together documents, correspondence, publications and a selection of paintings tracing the career of writer and artist Antonio Fernández Molina.
Antonio Fernández Molina’s archive arrives at IAACC Pablo Serrano
The exhibition, produced by the Government of Aragon and curated by Chus Tudelilla, is on display in Room 011 at IAACC Pablo Serrano. Rather than presenting a conventional exhibition of visual art, it focuses on the documents, intellectual connections and materials that shaped Fernández Molina’s creative universe.
The opening was attended by the director general for Culture and Cultural Heritage, Pedro Olloqui; the museum’s director, Julio Ramón; the curator; and Elena Fernández Echeverría, the artist’s daughter. The event began with a minute of silence in memory of Ana Armillas, a cultural officer with the Government of Aragon who died on Thursday.
Antonio Fernández Molina, born in Alcázar de San Juan in 1927 and who died in Zaragoza in 2005, pursued a wide-ranging career as a poet, fiction writer, columnist, art critic and visual artist. The exhibition presents both his artistic output and his literary work, marked by fantastical characters, symbols, and a dreamlike, celebratory interpretation of art.
Letters, journals and publications reconstruct postwar culture
The exhibition brings together correspondence, literary journals, first editions, exhibition catalogs and other publications from the Antonio Fernández Molina Archive, the María Moliner Humanities Library at the University of Zaragoza, and the collections of IAACC Pablo Serrano itself. The materials reflect the breadth of genres he pursued: poetry, novels, short fiction, essays, theater and screenplays.
The exhibition is organized into four sections: Generación del 51, on the founding and editorship of the journal Doña Endrina; Miguel Labordeta y A. F. Molina, focused on the relationship between the two writers from the 1950s onward; Papeles de Son Armadans, the journal whose secretary Camilo José Cela appointed Fernández Molina in 1964; and A. F. Molina en Zaragoza, dedicated to his intellectual activity after moving to the Aragonese capital in 1975.
Among the materials on display is a selection from the more than 1,000 letters preserved in the archive. Fernández Molina corresponded with figures including Vicente Aleixandre, Juan Eduardo Cirlot, Gloria Fuertes, María Zambrano, Alejandra Pizarnik and Mathias Goeritz. These exchanges offer insight into the literary concerns of the period, publishing challenges and the networks connecting creators during the postwar years.
The exhibition plans guided tours and the critical edition Llegan cartas
The curator has reviewed and selected part of this correspondence for the exhibition and for Llegan cartas, a critical edition by Chus Tudelilla published by Pregunta with the collaboration of IAACC Pablo Serrano and the Government of Aragon.
The program accompanying Gabinete. Archivo Antonio Fernández Molina will include the presentation of this publication, curator-led guided tours and other activities to be announced during the exhibition period. The exhibition thus offers a journey through the literary, artistic and publishing constellation that accompanied Fernández Molina from his earliest creative years through his time in Zaragoza.
