The Technological Institute of Aragon (ITA) and the Aragonese Health Service (SALUD) have signed a collaboration agreement to develop a platform for Artificial Intelligence agents that aims to become the reference technological infrastructure for the digital transformation of public healthcare in the community.
The project, funded with 634,000 euros and initially valid until December 2026, represents a concrete and strategic step in the adoption of AI in the Spanish health sector, an area where demographic pressure, staff shortages, and the need for operational efficiency have become priority challenges.
A common and scalable architecture
The new platform will integrate various existing health information systems and manage intelligent agents specialized in three main areas:
- Administrative tasks (automation of bureaucratic processes)
- Assistance processes
- Support for clinical decision-making
According to the agreement, ITA will be responsible for the complete technical design, the definition of architectures and standards, integration with SALUD’s corporate systems, the development of pilot projects, and the subsequent evaluation of infrastructure models to ensure their sustainability and scalability.
“This initiative not only aims to improve efficiency but also to strengthen the responsiveness of the healthcare system and optimize service delivery to citizens,” highlight both institutions.
Training and ethical governance
One of the most significant aspects of the agreement is its strong component of knowledge transfer. ITA will design and deliver a specific training plan aimed at technical, administrative, and assistance professionals, with the goal of fostering a responsible adoption of these technologies within the healthcare system.
All development will be carried out under the principles of the AI Governance Framework of the Government of Aragon, ensuring strict compliance with European regulations regarding security, data protection (GDPR), transparency, and human oversight.
Aragon positions itself at the forefront of health technology
With this project, Aragon joins the autonomous communities that are firmly committed to applying artificial intelligence to public services. The initiative not only seeks to address immediate problems of saturation and bureaucracy but also aims to lay the groundwork for future innovative use cases in personalized medicine, assisted diagnosis, and predictive healthcare resource management.
For ITA, this agreement reinforces its role as a bridge between advanced technological research and the real needs of the public sector, contributing to the creation of a more efficient, sustainable, and people-centered healthcare system.
Such public-private collaborations (or in this case, between a technological center and health administration) are emerging as a model to be followed in other regions of Spain and Europe, especially in a context where the European Commission is strongly promoting the adoption of high-value-added AI in health.
Thus, the Aragonese healthcare system takes a firm step towards the future: from traditional digitalization to intelligent automation. A path that, if executed well, could become a national benchmark.
