Aragón to Coordinate the EU Sports Council in 2026

The Government of Aragón will take over the coordination of the European Union Sports Council between January and July 2026, an body where the main European initiatives in sports are discussed and adopted. Aragón will perform this role on behalf of all Spanish autonomous communities, coinciding with the Cypriot presidency of the EU.

The coordination by Aragón is part of the system for autonomous participation in European matters agreed upon in the Conference for Matters Related to the European Union (CARUE), which allows autonomous communities to effectively contribute to the European legislative process in areas within their competence.

During the first half of 2026, Aragón will be responsible for attending all technical meetings of the Sports Council in Brussels and relaying information to all autonomous communities; presenting amendments and contributions to the European texts being worked on; and coordinating the preparation of a common position for all autonomous communities on matters of special relevance. The Minister of Education, Culture, and Sports, Tomasa Hernández, will represent the autonomous communities before the European sports ministers at the Council of Ministers on May 12, 2026, in Brussels.

Aragón has defined two topics of interest to develop: sports tourism, which is currently at the center of the debate at the European level; and sports, physical activity, and mental health, an area of growing interest for European regions.

The semester will include six meetings of the technical working group between January and June, plus the European Sports Council of Ministers on May 12. After the semester concludes, the Government of Aragón will prepare a final report sent to all autonomous communities. The work will be carried out in coordination with representatives from the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports of Spain at the Permanent Representation to the EU.
