Government of Aragón and Huesca Provincial Council to Execute North Guara Axis
The Government of Aragón and the Provincial Council of Huesca have signed an addendum to the action protocol to develop the North Guara Axis, a strategic infrastructure project in the Natural Park of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara. The initiative aims to improve connectivity, socio-economic development, and sustainable tourism promotion in the region, with execution planned to begin in 2026.
The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Manuel Blasco, and the President of the Provincial Council of Huesca, Isaac Claver, signed the addendum that outlines the financial commitments of both institutions. The project has a total budget of 8 million euros, distributed between the Government of Aragón (6 million) and the Provincial Council of Huesca (2 million). The funds will be allocated over the years 2026, 2027, and 2028.
The agreement includes institutional collaboration in the bidding, awarding, and administrative and environmental processing of the works, as well as the necessary approval of the regional budget for 2026 with a specific allocation designated for this purpose.
The forest track will connect the areas of Bara (Sabiñánigo) and Las Bellostas (Aínsa-Sobrarbe) with a length of 15 kilometers and includes the construction of a viaduct over the Alcanadre River.
The project is divided into two distinct sections:
Section 1 (kilometers 0+000 to 3+190): a newly designed forest track that starts from the area of Bara heading south, crossing the Alcanadre River via a 36-meter span viaduct. The platform will have a useful width of 4 meters, with widening up to 6 meters on curves, and a design speed of 40 km/h.
Section 2 (kilometers 3+190 to 15+351): widening and improving the existing track, ensuring a minimum width of 4 meters, expandable to 6 meters where necessary. The surface will be bituminous on a gravel base, aesthetically integrating the work within the park.
The project has an environmental impact declaration, authorization from the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) for the bridge construction, and a favorable report from Heritage. It aligns with the provisions of the Natural Resource Management Plan for the park and its Governing Plan for Use and Management, which identifies the North Axis as a priority for improving accessibility and strengthening territorial cohesion in the areas of Nocito, Bara, and Las Bellostas.
The enhancement of communication infrastructure will facilitate access to various areas of the Natural Park, recognized with the Q Quality Tourism certification. The project ensures a new communication route for emergency services, boosts active, family, and nature tourism, improves accessibility for people with disabilities, and guarantees responsible public use that is compatible with the preservation of the natural environment.
