Eurosystem Selects Ibercaja to Participate in the Digital Euro Pilot

The Eurosystem has selected Ibercaja, Abanca, Unicaja, Cecabank, Bizum, and Deloitte to participate in the digital euro pilot, a project aimed at transforming the European payments ecosystem and establishing a new generation of digital financial services.

The Digital Euro Project

The digital euro is a key initiative of the Eurosystem designed to strengthen monetary sovereignty and financial competitiveness in the eurozone. Its goal is to offer a digital alternative to cash, ensuring that both citizens and businesses can access central bank money in an increasingly digital environment. This proposal responds to the growing needs of the European economy, driving innovation in payments.

Pilot Phase, Timeline, and Use Cases

The current phase of the project includes tests in a productive environment aimed at validating functionalities, operational processes, and the user experience of the digital euro. During this stage, various use cases will be assessed, including peer-to-peer payments, e-commerce, physical retail, and offline payment scenarios. These tests, which will last approximately twelve months, are set to begin in the second half of 2027 and will involve employees from Eurosystem central banks and selected merchants.

The Selected Alliance and Its Capabilities

The alliance formed by Ibercaja, Abanca, Unicaja, Cecabank, Bizum, and Deloitte has been chosen by the Eurosystem for this phase of digital euro development. This collaboration is notable for its commitment to financial innovation and its capacity to contribute to the development of future services associated with this new European infrastructure. The participating entities bring complementary capabilities across the entire value chain of payments, from technological infrastructure to user experience.

Within the consortium, Ibercaja, Abanca, and Unicaja provide their customer knowledge and expertise in financial services. Cecabank focuses on technological infrastructure and integration with the digital euro platform, while Bizum contributes its experience in digital payments. Deloitte, for its part, offers an international perspective on the evolution of payment methods and the development of central bank digital currency initiatives.

Participation in this pilot will allow the entities to gain firsthand experience, enhancing their ability to develop more agile and secure payment solutions. The combination of their capabilities will enable a comprehensive approach to the various areas of the pilot, contributing to the technical and operational validation of the digital euro.

With this initiative, the participating entities not only reinforce their contribution to the development of a more competitive and efficient payments infrastructure for Europe but also drive innovative and secure solutions for citizens, businesses, and merchants. The selection of this alliance for the digital euro pilot underscores its significance in the transformation of the European payments system, consolidating a sovereign digital infrastructure tailored to the new economic demands of the eurozone.
