Azcón Celebrates That Aragón Will Train 365 Doctors Annually Following Historic Increase in Places
The President of the Government of Aragón, Jorge Azcón, highlighted that the regional university system will train 365 doctors each year, a figure achieved after a historic increase in places for the Bachelor’s degree in Medicine. These statements were made during the inauguration of the 2025/2026 academic year at the San Jorge University.
The Aragonese university system has experienced significant growth in medical training opportunities, increasing from 245 places in 2023 to the current 365. In 2023, the University of Zaragoza offered 245 places distributed between the Zaragoza campus (200) and Huesca (45).
The current regional government has created 120 new places in two years: an additional 20 at the San Francisco campus of the University of Zaragoza and 100 at San Jorge University.
Implementation of Medicine at San Jorge University
San Jorge University has started the 2025/2026 academic year with the Medicine studies fully filled, with 100 places. Azcón stated that these one hundred new students will be able to join the regional health system in a few years, which he considers «excellent news» given the historical need for more doctors in Aragón.
The president emphasized that 85% of medical students are from the autonomous community, which facilitates their staying in Aragón to practice their profession and integrate into the regional healthcare system.
Expansion Projects: Medicine in Teruel
Regarding the establishment of medical studies in Teruel, Azcón set the objective of launching it in the 2026-2027 academic year. The regional government underscored that a crucial step has been for the Obispo Polanco Hospital to become a university hospital, an essential requirement for conducting the necessary internships for the qualification.
