Route 1–Bajo Aragón Works Completed, Renewing 171 km

Work on Route 1–Lower Aragon under the Extraordinary Road Plan has been completed six months ahead of the maximum contractual deadline. The project has upgraded and improved 171 kilometers of the regional road network in Zaragoza and Teruel, with investment exceeding €51.7 million.

Lower Aragon route upgrades five roads between Zaragoza and Teruel

The Department of Public Works has accepted the work carried out by the Bajo Aragón concessionaire, comprising Pavasal and ACYC Obras y Servicios. The projects were carried out on the A-221 and A-1411 roads in Zaragoza province, and on the A-231, A-1410, and A-1409 in Teruel.

The project includes the full upgrading of the A-1410 between its junction with the N-232 and Castelserás, as well as the improvement and widening of the bridge over the Matarraña River in Maella. Work was also carried out on the bridge over the Mezquín River as it passes through the municipality of Castelserás.

The work improved the alignment and pavement of the A-231 and A-1409 roads, while the A-1411 underwent upgrades between Mequinenza and its intersection with the A-221. Completed sections also include the route between Mequinenza and Maella, as well as the entire Sástago bypass.

New barriers, drainage, and more than 3,600 signs across the road network

The project included 620 linear meters of new parapets, improvements to drainage systems, and new safety barriers at various points along the route. These measures complement the renewal of infrastructure designed to enhance road safety.

More than 3,600 signs were also replaced, and 405 kilometers of road markings were painted. Upgraded signage and visibility are part of the improvements made to the roads included in this route.

Lower Aragon is the second route completed under the regional plan

Route 1–Lower Aragon is the second of the 11 routes planned under the Extraordinary Road Plan to complete construction, following Route 3–Central Zaragoza, which was completed last September. The remaining nine will be progressively completed by mid-2027.

The plan covers the transformation and modernization of 1,760 kilometers across 51 roads, with €630 million in construction investment. The concession model provides for total investment of €2.6 billion and assigns responsibility for maintaining these roads to the concessionaires for the next 25 years.
