Inauguration of Cristina de Middel’s Exhibition in Fuendetodos, Zaragoza

The Diputación de Zaragoza celebrates the 280th anniversary of Goya’s birth with the inauguration of «Between Fiction and Evidence,» an exhibition by photographer Cristina de Middel. The exhibit, held in the Ignacio Zuloaga room in Fuendetodos, will be open to the public until June 14, inviting visitors to question the objectivity of photographic images and the role of media in shaping reality.

A Journey Between Technique and Concept

The exhibition features 40 photolithographs, a technique that translates photography into the language of artistic printing. This artisanal and industrial process uses color separations and multiple plates, up to six in some cases, printed successively on the same paper. This approach emphasizes the materiality of the image and reinforces the dialogue between technique, concept, and final outcome, offering a unique visual experience.

Visual and Narrative Explorations

The first series of the exhibition focuses on a project conducted in Mexico regarding the migratory route to the United States, created for Enigma magazine. De Middel explores the border as a physical, political, and symbolic space, offering a poetic and critical perspective on official narratives and the invisible stories in transit territories.

The second series, based on the book The Origin of the Mist, results from a trip to New Zealand. Against the backdrop of widely photographed landscapes, the artist uses a mirror in front of the lens to reflect on the limits of landscape photography, questioning conventional viewpoints and highlighting the cultural construction of the image.

Cristina de Middel: Career and Legacy

Born in 1975, Cristina de Middel began her career in photojournalism and humanitarian photography. With the series The Afronauts in 2012, her work shifted toward a narrative and symbolic exploration of fiction within the documentary language. Since 2017, De Middel has been a member and president of Magnum Photos, and she has published more than a dozen books. She currently lives and works between Spain, Mexico, and Brazil.

The exhibition «Between Fiction and Evidence» is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, remaining closed on Mondays, except on public holidays. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of art, technique, and narrative in the context of Goya’s legacy.
