Aragon is establishing itself as a European powerhouse in sustainable fertilization, thanks to the leadership of Fertinagro Biotech, a company that has transformed the agricultural sector with its innovative and sustainable approach. During a recent visit to its plant in Utrillas, Teruel, its strategic role in the future of agriculture was highlighted.
Business Model Based on the Circular Economy
Fertinagro Biotech, founded in 1986, celebrates 40 years of experience in fertilizer manufacturing, standing out for its business model grounded in the circular economy. The company utilizes manure as raw material, transforming and valorizing resources from the province of Teruel. With 28 industrial plants, it generates employment for 1,100 people, consolidating its presence in the sector.
This approach has not only allowed Fertinagro Biotech to excel in the national market but also to lay the foundation for more sustainable agriculture, reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
Production Capacity and Leadership in Europe
The production capacity of Fertinagro Biotech is remarkable, with an annual fertilizer production nearing 2 million tons, representing approximately 50% of the annual consumption in Spain. In March 2026, the company supplied fertilizers for over 300,000 hectares, underscoring its influence in the agricultural sector.
Aragon positions itself as the leading region in nitrogen fixation in Europe, allowing Spain to reduce its dependence on imports and mitigate associated geopolitical risks. This achievement is a testament to the region’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Innovation and International Expansion
Fertinagro Biotech has registered nearly 300 patents, focused on optimizing nitrogen and phosphorus use, and has extended its influence to over 80 countries. It not only exports fertilizers but also industrial technology, factories, and patents to major global companies.
The company has been recognized with the Agro-Food Research Award at the First Agro-Food Awards of Aragon 2025 and a National Innovation Award, reaffirming its position as a leader in innovation within the agri-food sector.
