The XXII Exhibition of Garnachas of the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Campo de Borja was inaugurated with the participation of Arancha Simón, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food of Aragón. This event marks her first public appearance at the helm of the Department, accompanied by Amparo Cuéllar, General Director of Food Innovation and Promotion.
The Strategic Role of the DOP Campo de Borja
During the inauguration, Simón emphasized the importance of the DOP Campo de Borja as a prominent reference for Aragonese and Spanish wines. The region boasts more than 6,000 hectares of vineyards and a production that exceeds 25 million kilograms of grapes. Furthermore, its wines reach over 60 countries, reflecting the garnacha’s ability to adapt to international markets and project the name of Aragón globally.
Simón highlighted garnacha as the most important Aragonese grape variety at both the national and international levels. This recognition not only underscores the quality of the product but also its significance in promoting Aragonese wine on the world stage.
Impact of the Wine Sector in Aragón
The Minister underscored the value of the set of Aragonese designations of origin, which include Campo de Borja, Cariñena, Calatayud, Somontano, Aylés, Urbezo, and Cava. According to Simón, these designations reflect the diversity and quality of the region’s wine sector. She described wine as one of our great brands, highlighting its strategic role in job creation, population retention in rural areas, and its contribution to Aragón’s international projection.
Promotion Initiatives and Institutional Commitment
Simón reaffirmed the Department of Agriculture’s commitment to the international promotion of Aragonese wines under the slogan «Aragón, Sabor de verdad.» She highlighted the importance of moving away from excessive bureaucracy that originates from Brussels to facilitate the sector’s internationalization. In her speech, she congratulated the Regulatory Council, the wineries, and the professionals who have made the organization of the exhibition possible.
