Researchers from the Agro-Food Research and Technology Center of Aragón (CITA) participated in the XLIV Congress of the Spanish Society of Genetics, held in Cartagena from July 8 to 11. This event brought together experts in genetics to discuss recent advances and promote collaboration among professionals.
Highlighted Presentations
Sara Pérez Redondo, a researcher in the Animal Science department at CITA, delivered an oral presentation on a genomic association study in sheep, comparing 22 native breeds. This study, which analyzes the relationship between genomic regions and bioclimatic variables, earned her a scholarship from the Spanish Society of Genetics for the quality of her research.
On the other hand, Jorge Hugo Calvo, the Director of Research at CITA, presented a poster on the effect of stress tolerance and the supplementation with sainfoin on miRNA profiles in Rasa Aragonesa sheep. This work is part of a larger project aimed at identifying biomarkers of tolerance to water and parasitic stress.
EWESTRESS Project
The presented works are linked to the EWESTRESS project (PID2020-114466RR-I00), funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This project aims to develop marker-assisted selection strategies to identify sheep with greater tolerance to water stress and parasitic infections.
Collaboration in Canine Studies
Jorge Hugo Calvo has also collaborated in a study on the genetic regulation of idiopathic epilepsy in dogs, led by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Zaragoza and the Agro-Food Institute of Aragón (IA2). This study focuses on analyzing different types of RNA to better understand this condition in canines.
Spanish Society of Genetics
The Spanish Society of Genetics, founded in 1972, is a non-profit organization that promotes genetic research in Spain. In addition to organizing congresses like this one, the SEG annually awards the National Prizes in Genetics, fostering excellence in various areas of genetics, from human to microbiological.
