Guara Somontano: Spain’s First Rural DTI Destination by FITUR 2026

The Comarca of Somontano de Barbastro has been recognized as the first rural destination in Spain to receive the accreditation of Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI). This achievement, formalized at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) on January 22, 2026, highlights the excellence of Guara Somontano in tourist management, positioning it alongside renowned urban destinations.

A milestone that makes a difference

Guara Somontano has achieved a compliance level of over 80% in the DTI model, a milestone that only nine other destinations in Spain have reached. Among them are cities like Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia. The distinction of Guara Somontano as the only rural area in this select group underscores its uniqueness and commitment to tourist excellence.

The recognition as DTI not only highlights the quality of the destination but also emphasizes the comarca’s ability to compete with large cities in terms of innovation and tourist sustainability.

Evaluation criteria and excellence

The DTI accreditation is based on a rigorous methodology that evaluates 262 indicators distributed across five strategic axes: governance, sustainability, innovation, technology, and accessibility. Exceeding 80% of these criteria reflects an integrated and proactive tourist management approach, aimed both at visitors and the well-being of the local population.

This approach seeks not only to enhance the tourist experience but also to promote sustainable development that benefits the entire community of Somontano de Barbastro.

Presentation and assessment of the recognition

The accreditation plaque was presented by Rosario Sánchez, Secretary of State for Tourism, and Enrique Martínez, President of Segittur, to Saúl Pérez, President of the Comarca of Somontano de Barbastro, alongside tourism officials Sandra Navarro and Loreto Fuertes. During the presentation, Pérez expressed that this recognition is «an honor» and highlighted that «it makes us the first rural destination in Spain to achieve this distinction.»

This achievement is a testament to the good work being done in the tourism sector in the comarca, consolidating Guara Somontano as a benchmark in intelligent and sustainable tourism.
