The Regulatory Council of Jamón de Teruel Publishes Its First Sustainability Report Aligned with International Standards
The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Jamón de Teruel/Paleta de Teruel and the Protected Geographical Indication Cerdo de Teruel has published its first sustainability document. The report outlines the main initiatives developed by the entity to contribute to a more responsible, transparent, and environmentally committed agrifood model, prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The work was carried out by the Segovian consultancy AyC, specialized in Geographical Indications, and financed by the Teruel Provincial Council with €3,900.
The report focuses its analysis on five pillars: governance, economy, environment, social impact, and innovation. Through these dimensions, it examines the transversal impact of the Regulatory Council’s activities on environmental, social, and economic aspects.
The document highlights the settlement of population in rural areas with presence in 64 municipalities of the province, generating more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The agrifood sector supported by these quality designations represents 16% of Teruel’s GDP. Exports of products with this label reach 30 countries. European studies estimate that products with differentiated quality have a retail value that is double compared to products without protected designation of origin or geographical indication.
The Regulatory Council conducts certification controls that ensure that the ham, shoulder, or meat cuts produced under these quality designations comply with the highest standards.
The Sustainability Report positions Jamón de Teruel as a pioneer in the differentiated quality sector and reinforces its leadership as a benchmark for quality, tradition, and sustainable innovation in the Spanish meat sector. The document is available on the official website of the Regulatory Council.
