The Monastery of San Juan de la Peña will host an ancient calligraphy workshop on April 11 and 12, organized by the Department of Environment and Tourism of the Government of Aragon. This activity promises to immerse attendees in the art of historical writing, with a special focus on the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña, a key document linked to the monastery.
An immersive workshop in the art of historical calligraphy
The workshop, which will be held as a residential event, will offer a total of 10 hours of instruction and will be limited to 20 participants. The registration fee is 60 euros, which includes accommodation in a double room with breakfast and lunch on Saturday. The activity is open to both beginners and those with prior experience, adapting the content to different skill levels. Participants will learn everything from the basic use of the nib to advanced stroke refinement techniques.
The training will focus on the study and partial reproduction of the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña. Participants will work with individualized teaching materials to learn the alphabet and will engage in continuous practical exercises. Additionally, on Saturday afternoon, there will be a lecture-discussion led by historian Javier Lázaro, who will address the historical significance of the monastery.
Detailed program and complementary activities
The workshop will begin on Saturday with six hours of training divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The Sunday schedule will consist of three blocks: review of content, a mid-break, and partial reproduction of the cover of the Chronicle, concluding around 2:00 PM. The event will finish with a diploma ceremony in the adjacent baroque church of the guesthouse, featuring a performance by the Coral de Almudévar, open to the general public.
For those wishing to participate, reservations will be open until April 2 and can be made via email at asanchoramirez@gmail.com. On April 6, accepted applicants will be notified of the steps to formalize their registration and payment. The optional Saturday dinner will incur an additional cost of 22 euros. Master Javier Franco will lead the team of calligraphers, ensuring a rich educational experience.
