Hyundai Motor Group has announced a $15.5 billion investment plan in India between 2026 and 2032. The commitment, to be channeled through companies including Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, will focus on expanding manufacturing capacity, strengthening research and development, increasing local sourcing, and advancing mobility technologies.
The announcement coincided with a meeting in New Delhi between the group’s executive chairman, Euisun Chung, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Business Standard, Hyundai plans to establish an investment entity in the country to coordinate the program’s implementation, identify local partners, and facilitate collaboration with suppliers. The investment has been announced for the next seven years and does not represent capital already deployed.
Boosting production and R&D
The plan includes expanding the capacity of Hyundai Motor India and Kia India and increasing the localization of components. The group also aims to develop regional suppliers and build a more stable supply chain. Hyundai says these measures will help strengthen India’s role as an export hub.
As part of the program, the company plans to allocate approximately $700 million to its Indian R&D center, including a vehicle test track. Its stated objective is to accelerate the development of next-generation automotive technologies and expand the training and recruitment of local talent.
New mobility activities
Hyundai will also explore opportunities related to mobility services, specialized auto financing, electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, and end-of-life vehicle recycling. The group also plans to support high-potential startups and integrate these activities with its core vehicle business.
According to data cited by the newspaper, Hyundai Motor Group employs more than 24,000 people in India and has production capacity of more than 1.4 million vehicles a year. That figure includes Hyundai’s facilities in Chennai and Pune, as well as Kia India’s plant in Anantapur. The company plans to increase capacity at its Pune factory, although the published information does not specify the timetable or the additional volume.
