Aragonese wines have been the protagonists this week of the showroom organized by the public company Aragón Exterior and the Department of Agriculture in the London restaurant Hispania, the largest restaurant in Europe dedicated to Spanish gastronomy. Nine wineries from the four Aragonese designations of origin presented their wines to British professionals.
Some 55 guests, including importers, distributors, restaurant professionals, Masters of Wine and representatives of the Spanish Trade Office in London, came to learn about Aragon’s offer, and were able to taste Aragonese wines, learn about them in depth in a masterclass and pair them with tapas of typical products from Aragon.
Each winery had its own table where they could present their wines and meet with the guests. Raúl Igual, twice Best Sommelier in Spain, Advanced Sommelier CMS and manager of the renowned Yain restaurant in Teruel, was in charge of leading a masterclass entitled “Aragón – Garnacha’s Fingerprint” in which the wines of Aragón were presented, including a reference from each participating winery.
British guests were also able to sample a tapas menu, prepared by Hispania’s renowned chef, Marcos Morán, as well as a sliced Jamón de Teruel DOP.
“In 2021, the UK was the top destination for Aragonese wine exports, ahead of other strong markets such as the United States or Germany, and this year sales to that country have increased even more,” explained Ramón Tejedor, managing director of AREX. “With the ‘Wines from Aragon’ showroom we want to consolidate the position of Aragonese wines in the British market and transmit in first person the quality and diversity of the Aragonese offer.”
“This action achieves a premium positioning of our wines and differentiated quality brands, while at the same time it gives prestige to our professionals, pantry, cuisine and gastronomy of Aragon. We are a very dynamic sector in its exports and I congratulate all those who continue to bet on the United Kingdom, one of our main food buying markets,” said Carmen Urbano, director general of Agri-Food Innovation of the Government of Aragon.
Aragonese wine exports around the world have evolved very favorably in recent months, leaving behind the pandemic crisis. Up to July this year they have already exceeded 66 million euros in sales abroad, compared to a total value of 105 million euros in the whole of 2021.
