Ibercaja Foundation Launches «Emerging Voices» in Zaragoza 2023

Ibercaja Foundation launches the third edition of Emerging Voices with five conferences on art and culture

Ibercaja Foundation presents a new edition of its Emerging Voices series, a program that gives a platform to young researchers in the cultural and artistic fields. The third edition will begin in October at the Patio de la Infanta in Zaragoza with five free conferences that require prior registration.

First conference: Images of Japan in Europe
The opening of the series presents an inconsistency in the original text regarding the date (both Thursday, October 2, and Friday, October 3 are mentioned). The conference Imagining the Edges of the World: The First Images of Japan in Europe will be delivered by Alejandro M. Sanz, a PhD in Art History and fellow at the Bank of Spain in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints at the Prado Museum. The talk will address the earliest images disseminated in Europe about Japan and their impact on the construction of the image of Japanese culture in the European intellectual foundations of the 16th century.

Second conference: Goya and International Exhibitions
On October 17, Bárbara Romero, a postdoctoral researcher at the Provenance Lab of Leuphana University (Germany), will present Goya, Exhibitions and Networks in the 19th Century: Visible and Invisible Connections of Spanish Art. The conference will analyze Goya’s significance as a key figure in the most relevant international exhibitions of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Third conference: The Silversmiths of Zaragoza
Marc Millán, a PhD in Art History, will lead a conference on October 31 about the silversmiths of Zaragoza in the Modern Age. The talk will focus on the workshops located on the current street of Manifestación, explaining through images and documentation the work of these artisans who constituted a significant productive sector in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Closing conferences of the cultural series

Reflections on Contemporary Writing
On November 7, Sara Barquinero, a PhD in Philosophy and a writer, will present Notes from Anywhere: Insights from a Writer. Her lecture will propose a reflection on the current tensions of writing and share her experience of writing as a way of life.

Female Monastic Architecture
The series will conclude on November 27 with Verónica Abenza, a Ramón y Cajal researcher in the Department of Art History at Complutense University of Madrid. Her conference Sigena and Female Monastic Architecture: New Avenues of Research will propose new study methodologies to investigate the architecture of ecclesiastical and cloister spaces, with particular attention to the paintings dated around 1190 and the promoters Sancha of Castile and Constanza of Aragon.

The program features free entry with prior registration through the Ibercaja Foundation website. The entity, a private non-profit foundation resulting from the transformation of Ibercaja, is dedicated to creating and promoting social and cultural initiatives, fostering the development of individuals and improving the territory under the values of commitment, transparency, professionalism, and dynamism.
