Aragón participates in an international seminar on digital technologies in heritage
The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of Aragón is participating on October 1 and 2 in the HerOn International Seminar organized by the University of Zaragoza. The event focuses on the use of digital technologies applied to cultural heritage and the implementation of digital twins.
The HerOn International Seminar: Digital Cultural Heritage Twins Connections aims to showcase research and case studies that integrate digital twins applied to architectural, archaeological, and natural cultural heritage. The initiative combines satellite, aerial, and terrestrial technologies to enhance the documentation, analysis, and education of heritage.
The Government of Aragón participated in the inaugural event on Wednesday and is presenting on Thursday the lecture titled «Knowledge Heritage Network (KHN): Towards a New Preventive Conservation of Cultural Heritage. The Retech Axis in Aragón.» The presentation explains the development and implementation of the Knowledge Heritage Network (KHN) project in the autonomous community.
On a technical level, the project is executed through three contracts that address axes 1 and 2 of the KHN Project:
- Computer platform: The central element of the project in Aragón, currently in execution
- Digitization work: Also in execution, aimed at obtaining digital twins of the BIC and HBIM models
- Sensory and monitoring: Remote monitoring system for cultural assets
These actions are implemented with contracts announced for 2025, and the Aragonese Executive is working jointly with the autonomous communities of Castilla y León and Galicia.
Specific implementation in Aragón
José Antonio Andrés Moreno, head of prevention, protection, and research of Cultural Heritage, emphasized that the KHN project «represents a window for us into new technologies in the documentation, diagnosis, and management of Aragonese cultural heritage.» In 2022, the regional government expressed interest in the Retech initiatives, and in 2023, its participation was officially determined through an agreement at the sectoral conference for digital transformation.
The development in Aragón includes two specific axes: a digital database powered by digital twins of the assets and BIM models of the buildings, and a general remote monitoring plan with the installation of sensors in the BIC and real-time monitoring systems.
