The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the construction of the Jaca Bypass for €135.3 million. This highway, over 8 kilometers long, will connect the A‑21 with the A‑23, detouring around Jaca to the north. The contract for the construction of the Jaca Bypass, awarded for €135.3 million, involves infrastructure that will connect the A‑21 with the A‑23 while avoiding the urban center. The objective is to redirect medium and long-distance traffic, which is currently concentrated on the N‑330a and N‑240 thoroughfares, thereby alleviating local traffic congestion. Additionally, it is expected to decrease noise and enhance road safety, increasing user comfort by reducing travel times.
Connections and role in the road network
The new section will link to the A‑23 to the east and the A‑21 to the west, providing continuity to an alternative route to the Ebro corridor. This corridor is crucial for the integration of Aragón, allowing long-distance traffic to utilize this new route instead of urban thoroughfares.
Technical characteristics of the bypass
The highway will have a length of 8.05 kilometers with two lanes separated by a variable-width median. The lanes will measure 3.5 meters wide, with shoulders of 2.5 meters on the outer side and 1.0 meter on the inner side. Three interchanges will be built: Jaca East, Jaca North, and Jaca West, as well as three viaducts, a 200-meter false tunnel, a pedestrian bridge, and several overpasses and underpasses.
The project includes environmental integration measures such as the re-vegetation of slopes and the installation of hunting fencing to protect wildlife. Acoustic barriers will also be incorporated to minimize noise impact.
The Jaca Bypass, announced on August 7, 2026, represents a significant improvement for the long-distance road network, combining functionality with reduced impacts on the municipality while enhancing user safety and comfort.
