Vice President Mar Vaquero represents the autonomous community at the plenary session of the Committee of the Regions, highlighting the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union by Spain and Portugal. This event underscores Aragón’s ongoing commitment to European integration and its growing influence in community policies.
Commemoration of the Anniversary
During the event, the Spanish and Portuguese delegations were recognized for the 40th anniversary of their accession to the EU. Mar Vaquero emphasized that this event marked a turning point in the history of Aragón, initiating a process of significant modernization and transformation. Furthermore, she affirmed that Aragón reaffirms its commitment to Europe and that its voice is increasingly heard in community institutions.
Financial Claims
Mar Vaquero advocated for greater autonomy for the autonomous communities in managing European funds, opposing any attempts at recentralization. She called for a modification of the allocation criteria for funds to consider factors such as depopulation, aging, dispersion, and density, arguing that regions provide a closer and fairer perspective in decision-making.
The Vice President highlighted that integration into Europe has provided Aragón with economic opportunities through funds and access to the single market, in addition to protecting strategic sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and logistics. She stressed that Europe has enabled innovation in key areas such as technology, defense, and aerospace, and has ensured legal security in the face of instability, advocating for a cohesion policy that adequately values each territory.
Mar Vaquero concluded by reaffirming that Aragón will continue to be an active participant in building a just, free, and strong Europe, highlighting the importance of maintaining secure borders and clear values in the face of global threats.
