The Technological Institute of Aragon (ITA) has taken a significant step in the development of technologies for a safer and more efficient mining sector by validating advances from the European project MASTERMINE in Finland. This initiative aims to create an autonomous mucking machine for underground mines, marking a milestone in the automation of the mining industry.
International Collaboration and Technological Development
The MASTERMINE project, in which the ITA participates, has benefited from collaboration with the University of Tampere and the company Tapojärvi, reinforcing its European character. Lorenzo Montano, an engineer from the ITA’s Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation team, has led the trials in Finland. These tests focused on validating crucial technologies for the autonomous operation of the machine, including a LiDAR-based localization system. This system allows the machine to accurately determine its position in mining environments, overcoming the limitations of conventional positioning technologies.
Additionally, the first trials of the trajectory planning system were conducted, designed to create safe and efficient routes. This advancement will enable the autonomous vehicle to navigate within the mine, avoiding obstacles and adapting to terrain conditions, thereby increasing the safety and efficiency of mining operations.

MASTERMINE is part of the goal to digitally and sustainably transform the mining sector. The project promotes the use of advanced technologies such as autonomous vehicles, digital twins, and artificial intelligence.
