Aragón Celebrates 50 Years of Language Schools: Half a Century of Empowering Citizens and Opening Doors to the World

The Official Language Schools (EOI) of Aragón celebrate their 50th anniversary today with an institutional event at the Eduardo del Pueyo Auditorium of the Higher Conservatory of Music of Aragón. The celebration highlights half a century of educational work that has trained over half a million students and has established itself as one of the pillars of the public foreign language education system in Spain.

The acting Minister of Education, Culture, and Sport, Tomasa Hernández, presided over the inauguration and emphasized the strategic role of these institutions: “The EOIs do not just teach languages: they build citizenship.” Hernández highlighted that “each language learned adds a new way of understanding life” and praised the “constant evolution and adaptability” of the Aragonese network, which now includes 12 official centers and 20 extensions distributed throughout the autonomous territory. Each year, their official diplomas certify the linguistic level of more than 3,000 students through the BRIT program, a national benchmark in competency accreditation.

The central event, taking place throughout the day, combines academic, cultural, and human dimensions. In the morning, lectures and round tables with teachers and students from Aragón and other autonomous communities took place, analyzing the past, present, and future of language learning in a globalized context. The day included readings of literary excerpts in eight different languages, a living showcase of the linguistic diversity promoted by the EOIs.

During the evening gala, the Educational Innovation Awards were presented. The first award went to the Department of Spanish as a Foreign Language at EOI No. 1 in Zaragoza for the project “I Have a Message for You,” a solidarity and integrative initiative that connects students with residents of senior centers and day centers through language. The runner-up award was given to the Río Vero School in Barbastro for its internationalization project within the framework of the Erasmus+ program. Additionally, the winning photograph of the “Capturing Moments at the EOI” contest was awarded to student Juan Ramón Hernando Encuentra, specializing in English.

The celebration is completed with the screening of a congratulatory video from prominent figures in the fields of culture, art, politics, and sports, along with performances by the Choir of EOI No. 1 in Zaragoza and the musical theater “Mamma Mia.” These cultural activities highlight that the EOIs are not only centers of formal training but also spaces for meeting and artistic expression.

Since their founding in 1976, the Official Language Schools have evolved in pace with the Aragonese and Spanish society. Born in a time of democratic openness, they have transitioned from being specialized centers for majority languages to offering a wide range that includes less commonly taught languages, in-person, semi-presential, and distance modalities, and a strong commitment to official certification. Their impact transcends academia: they facilitate international mobility, improve employability, and promote intercultural empathy in an increasingly interconnected Europe and world.

“Congratulations on these 50 years of history. May this anniversary mark the beginning of a new stage for continued growth and innovation, and above all, for continuing to connect people through different languages,” concluded Minister Hernández. A message that summarizes the commitment of the Government of Aragón to an educational network that, after half a century, remains key to the personal, professional, and cultural projection of thousands of Aragonese.

This anniversary is not only a tribute to the past but also a reaffirmation of the future: in a world where mastering foreign languages has become an essential skill, the EOIs of Aragón maintain their public service vocation and their role as a bridge to the world.
