The Government of Aragón has approved an investment of 153,200 euros to restore part of the roof of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Fountain, located in Peñarroya de Tastavins, in the province of Teruel. The work will cover three slopes of the east and south wings of the building, areas that have not been addressed until now.
The sanctuary, declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1931, is a complex of significant historical and artistic value. It consists of a Baroque hermitage built next to the river, a second 14th-century Gothic-Mudéjar hermitage, a Renaissance cloister, and an ancient guesthouse. The variety of styles reflects the architectural evolution of the site over the centuries.
The roof, with its polyhedral structure, shows deterioration that threatens the conservation of the entire complex. With this intervention, the Aragonese government aims to prevent structural damage and protect the original polychrome wooden decorations that are still preserved inside.
This work adds to previous efforts. Between 1984 and 2021, the regional administration had already allocated nearly 266,000 euros for conservation tasks at this sanctuary, which is part of the municipal heritage of Peñarroya de Tastavins.
The project bidding is already open, and interested companies will be able to submit their offers until August 5. The work is expected to begin in the coming months, once the contract is awarded.
This effort is part of a broader policy for the protection of Aragonese cultural heritage, especially in rural areas.
