The Somontano de Barbastro region, with its distinctive blend of mountain landscapes and farmland, is well worth visiting at any time of year. Yet the early autumn months may be among the most splendid times for a weekend getaway.
There are enduring reasons to visit throughout the year, including the area’s rich cultural heritage. One of its finest examples is the exceptionally well-preserved historic complex of Alquézar, crowned by the iconic Collegiate Church of Santa María and threaded with a maze of streets steeped in history.
The same can be said of the regional capital, Barbastro, home to its Cathedral and Diocesan Museum. Highlights of the town include Market Square, the colorful houses along the banks of the Vero River, and the Renaissance architecture of buildings such as Argensola Palace and Casa Latorre.
While Alquézar and Barbastro are the leading attractions, Somontano’s historical and artistic heritage extends much further. Visitors can explore the Romanesque Church of San Fructuoso in Bierge, the Sanctuary of Santa María de Dulcis in Buera, the ruins of the Farnagüelo Tower in Azlor, and the collection of noble houses in Estadilla.
Part of Somontano de Barbastro lies within the Vero River Cultural Park, home to a group of prehistoric rock paintings recognized as a World Heritage Site. Trails through the mountain landscape lead to these rock shelters, combining culture with outdoor activity.
Autumn may not be the best season for canyoning, but the area offers numerous mountain biking and hiking routes. The Salinas de Naval route is suitable for families, while the trail to the “rock cathedrals” is reserved for experienced cyclists.
This route passes through Rodellar and the Mascún Gorge, superb destinations for mountain biking and climbing, which can also be enjoyed on the rock faces of Alquézar and in the Olvena Gorge.
Barbastro and other towns in Somontano have embraced tourism and offer a broad range of accommodations, from hotels to rural guesthouses, at more affordable prices in the fall.
Somontano is also known for its wines and olive oils. Many wineries offer wine-tourism activities, including tastings and tours of their facilities, while olive oil producers invite visitors to discover their oleotourism experiences.
An autumn trip to Somontano offers the chance to enjoy its landscapes, rich history, and cuisine. In addition, the Cinca River is home to a fish farm renowned for producing caviar, a sought-after delicacy that rounds out this luxury experience.
