Telefónica and Minsait to Deploy Digital Euro Infrastructure

Telefónica and Minsait, an Indra Group company, have been selected by the European Central Bank as one of two contractors to deploy the communications and security infrastructure planned for a future digital euro, Indra said. The contract will run for 10 years and take effect on May 3, 2027.

The two companies have formed a consortium to design and deploy the associated networks and solutions. The infrastructure will connect the ECB with the public and private intermediaries that would participate in the system, including banks, financial technology companies, and payment service providers.

Division of responsibilities

Telefónica will be responsible for the communications infrastructure and its operation through various business units. The work will include deploying an MPLS network, designed to connect locations through a virtual private network, as well as SD-WAN capabilities for connectivity across multiple sites and cybersecurity services.

Minsait will provide the platforms and services designed to integrate applications, systems, and participants through application programming interfaces. It will also provide digital identity solutions, certificates and trust services, as well as a security operations center to detect and respond to threats. Its role will also cover the identification and access control of the parties involved and the encryption of communications between applications.

The proposal combines communications, data center, cybersecurity, operations, and technology integration capabilities. According to the corporate statement, this infrastructure would support the connection of the applications and services of a potential digital euro with the intermediaries serving individuals and businesses.
