The growth of Teruel Airport is also beginning to create new specialized training needs. The complex will include a hangar designed to train aircraft maintenance technicians, bringing vocational education into the same setting where companies and projects linked to the sector operate.
The project has been put out to tender with a budget of €1,446,973, excluding VAT, and an estimated construction period of 10 months. The future hangar will cover 1,094 square meters and will primarily support courses offered by Teruel’s IES Segundo de Chomón in the aeromechanical maintenance of turbine-powered aircraft.
The location is one of the project’s most significant features. Students will be able to complete part of their training within the airport environment itself, bringing technical education closer to an activity that in recent years has made Teruel Airport one of Spain’s leading industrial hubs linked to aviation.
Training tailored to the sector’s needs
The project seeks to meet the demand for qualified professionals generated by the airport’s own activity. The complex’s development has progressively expanded activities related to aircraft maintenance, storage and recycling, while new technology, aerospace and research projects are also being added.
The hangar will strengthen that connection between education and business through facilities specifically designed for hands-on training. The Government of Aragon had already begun the administrative process required to build it earlier this year.
The infrastructure could also have applications beyond vocational education. Teruel Polytechnic University School has considered using the facilities for certain practical sessions for future Aerospace Engineering degree students, through an agreement with the Government of Aragon’s Department of Education. University documentation indicates that discussions have already taken place to facilitate such access.
This possibility is particularly relevant in a region seeking to align the growth of its aviation infrastructure with the training of professionals capable of joining it.
An airport expanding its activities
The new educational hangar comes as Teruel Airport is expanding. Projects currently under development include a large hangar and building for the production of stratospheric airships, a contract awarded for €39.77 million, excluding VAT, with completion scheduled between late 2026 and early 2027.
Also planned is the future Integrated Training and Air Mobility Center for the Air and Space Force. The Ministry of Defense and the Airport Consortium signed a protocol in July to accelerate its rollout, with planned investment of close to €42 million.
The airport is also working with the Aragon Institute of Technology on an Aerospace Technology Center, for which a 1,500-square-meter building is under construction for research, innovation and testing activities.
Within this process, the training hangar operates on a different scale from the major industrial investments. Its importance lies in incorporating talent development into infrastructure growth.
Building a training facility within the airport itself advances precisely that goal: connecting the opportunities being created by the airport complex with the vocational and university education available in the region.
