Zaragoza launches ‘Zaragoza and Goya in Film’, a film project that explores the legacy of the painter through three audiovisual works
The City Council of Zaragoza presents the first edition of the film project ‘Zaragoza and Goya in Film’, a cultural initiative that promotes audiovisual creation inspired by the footprint and work of the artist Francisco de Goya in the city. The event, coordinated by Vicky Calavia, will take place next Monday at the Teatro Principal starting at 7 PM, featuring the screening of three audiovisual works that explore different perspectives of Goya’s legacy.
The first edition includes three distinct audiovisual proposals:
‘Lo mismo’ is a documentary short film directed by Eulalia Ramón and Anna Saura that establishes a connection between the war portrayed by Goya in his engravings and current conflicts.
‘Amarescencia’, by Mapi Rivera, is a video art piece that explores the painter’s connection to his religious work and the Marian apparitions of the Virgen del Pilar.
‘Capricho nº 0’, by Javier Calvo, focuses on the creator’s youth, his training, and his influence on Goya’s later works.
Event and Participation
The event includes screenings followed by a discussion featuring Anna Saura, Eulalia Ramón, María Zaragoza, Mapi Rivera, and Javier Calvo. Tickets are already sold out.
The City Council of Zaragoza has facilitated the production of the three audiovisual works through various resources: the Zaragoza Film Office managed filming permits and subsidized municipal fees; Zaragoza Turismo organized specialized guided tours to familiarize creators with Goya-related sites; and the Audio-Visual Laboratory assisted with sound post-production. Subsequently, the works will be integrated into the municipal website and the public audiovisual archive after completing their participation in film festivals and awards.
The project is part of the commemorations for the Bicentennial of the death of Francisco de Goya, which will culminate in 2028. These actions are being developed under a collaborative Autonomous Commission between the City Council of Zaragoza and the Government of Aragon. Other initiatives already launched include thematic exhibitions, the establishment of a Network of Goya Cities, and activities with the Academy of Noble and Fine Arts of San Luis.
