5 Unforgettable Days in Porto: A Journey to the Heart of Portugal

Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, is a destination that captivates with its decadent charm, colorful facades, narrow alleyways, and, of course, its world-famous wine. A five-day trip allows for a complete immersion in its unique atmosphere, exploration of its historical corners, and enjoyment of its rich culture and gastronomy.

Day 1: Arrival and the Charm of Ribeira

Upon arriving in Porto, you will find a city that looks straight out of a postcard. After settling in, dedicate the afternoon to exploring the vibrant heart of Porto: the Ribeira neighborhood. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets, colorful houses stacked one on top of the other, and a lively riverside promenade.

Stroll along the Douro River, admire the traditional rabelo boats (which used to transport barrels of wine), and soak in the atmosphere. Cross the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a partner of Gustave Eiffel, and marvel at the panoramic views of the city and the river, especially at sunset.

For dinner, choose one of the many terrace restaurants in Ribeira and savor a delicious plate of fresh seafood or the famous «bacalhau à Brás» (shredded cod with eggs and straw potatoes), accompanied, of course, by a local green wine.

Day 2: Panoramic Views and Neo-Gothic Splendor

Start the day by ascending the Clérigos Tower, the tallest bell tower in Porto. The climb can be challenging, but the 360-degree views of the city from the top are unparalleled.

Continue your journey to the majestic São Bento Station, famous for its over 20,000 tiles depicting scenes from the history of Portugal. It’s a must-visit, even if you are not taking a train.

In the afternoon, visit the Lello e Irmão Bookshop, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, said to have inspired J.K. Rowling in creating the magical world of Harry Potter. Be prepared for lines, but its art nouveau interior and gothic staircase are worth it. Nearby, the Igreja do Carmo and the Igreja dos Carmelitas showcase more of the beauty of Portuguese tiles.

For dinner, explore the area around Avenida dos Aliados, with its impressive early 20th-century buildings, and enjoy Portuguese cuisine in an elegant setting.

Day 3: The Cradle of Port Wine and Exuberant Gardens

The third day is dedicated to the iconic Port wine. Cross back over the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, the opposite bank of the Douro. Here you will find the famous Port wine cellars. Take a guided tour and tasting at one of the historic houses like Sandeman, Taylor’s, Graham’s, or Ferreira. You will learn about the winemaking process and enjoy its various styles.

In the afternoon, return to Porto and relax in the beautiful Crystal Palace Gardens. These romantically designed gardens offer unparalleled tranquility and spectacular views of the Douro River and the city. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll.

For dinner, consider trying a «francesinha,» the hearty local sandwich that is an explosion of flavors, or seek out a restaurant that offers «leitão assado» (roast suckling pig), a Portuguese delicacy.

Day 4: Art, Shopping, and the Atlantic Coast

Start the day by exploring the Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral), an imposing Romanesque fortress-church that offers more stunning views of the city. Then, wander through the Bairro da Sé, one of the oldest areas in Porto.

In the afternoon, if you’re in the mood for a bit of shopping or modern art, head to the Boavista area. Here you will find the Casa da Música, an impressive contemporary architectural building, and the Serralves Foundation, which houses a contemporary art museum alongside beautiful gardens.

If the weather permits, take the historic Tram 1 from Ribeira to Foz do Douro, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic. Enjoy a walk along the coast, watch the waves break, and relax in one of the seaside cafés.

For your last night, treat yourself to dinner at a fine dining restaurant or a cozy fado house.

Day 5: Farewell and Final Flavors

On your last day, depending on your flight time, you can take the opportunity to buy souvenirs on the Rua de Santa Catarina, the main pedestrian shopping street in Porto. Here you will also find the historic Café Majestic, an impressive example of Art Nouveau architecture, ideal for a final coffee or breakfast.

If you have time, visit the Mercado do Bolhão, a traditional market where you can observe local life, buy fresh produce, or crafts. Although it is currently under renovation, you can still find a temporary market nearby.

Before heading to the airport, be sure to enjoy one last pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) and take with you a sweet memory of this charming city.
