King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will visit Ceuta and Melilla on October 13 and 14, immediately after Spain’s National Day celebrations. The Royal Household announced the dates, which were agreed with the Prime Minister’s Office, although the itinerary has not yet been made public.
The visit will mark the return of a head of state to the two autonomous cities after nearly two decades. The most recent precedent was a 2007 trip by then-King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, which prompted an adverse reaction from Morocco.
The trip will take place amid Morocco’s claims over Ceuta and Melilla. According to published reports, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had previously confirmed that the visit would take place when circumstances permitted.
