The Pueblo Viejo de Belchite and the Roman dam at Almonacid de la Cuba can be visited together

Both Town Councils join forces in this initiative to expand the tourist offer in the area.

Tickets are available from 8 May at the virtual ticket office at www.belchite.es and in our Belchite Tourism section.

The Old Town of Belchite and the Roman dam of Almonacid de la Cuba can be visited with a combined ticket that will allow visitors to see both historical remains at the same time. The aim of this joint action, promoted by both Town Councils, is “to give a boost to tourism in the area, creating synergies between municipalities that allow us to enhance the value of our extensive heritage and attract new visitors”, says the Mayor of Belchite, Carmelo Pérez.

The new combined entrance will be included in the catalogue of visits offered by the Belchite council on its website to discover the wide range of activities on offer in the area. In the words of José Enrique Martínez, mayor of Almonacid de la Cuba, “the Roman dam is one of the best preserved hydraulic structures in the Peninsula among those built in its period, the 1st century A.D. It was the highest in Spain until 1590. Its great size is due to the fact that the Romans needed to cross a steep gorge to bring water. It is a real jewel”.

The area of the dam, located at the entrance to the village, has been fitted out to welcome tourists. A circular route can be followed along walkways and the monument can be seen from a suspension bridge at the bottom of the river. The hydraulic structure is 32 metres high and 107 metres wide, and the original access stairs, with 103 steps, have also recently been restored.

Visiting hours

In principle, the opening hours will be the same as for the single visit to the Old Town, although it is hoped to extend them during the summer, also during the week: Fridays at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm; Saturdays at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 4pm, 5pm and 6pm; and Sundays at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 4pm and 5pm.

In this way they hope that this new proposal will serve to recover tourist activity after months of closure due to the pandemic. The historical-artistic site of Belchite reopened its doors and resumed guided tours two months ago, coinciding with the celebration of 5 March.

Until 2019, more than 40,000 people visited Belchite every year, interested in its wide range of heritage, open air, nature and gastronomy. The ornithological reserve El Planerón, the wildlife refuge La Lomaza, the Ethnological Museum or an old oil mill are just some of the possibilities that Belchite offers to approach the territory.
