The Palacio de la Aljafería in Zaragoza will undergo a remarkable transformation as it prepares to host the significant exhibition «Goya, del Museo al Palacio,» featuring an array of works by the esteemed Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. With the Museo de Zaragoza currently undergoing renovations, this exhibition represents an extraordinary opportunity to showcase Goya’s masterpieces in a historic locale.
Spanning over a year and a half, the exhibition will display 45 works of art, including three of Goya’s etching albums and an additional 20 etchings. Among the notable pieces featured are the first edition albums of «Los Caprichos,» «Los Desastres de la Guerra,» «La Tauromaquia,» and «Los Disparates.» Also included are prominent portraits of King Carlos IV and Queen María Luisa de Parma sourced from the Museo del Prado.
This significant cultural event will take place in the monumental area of the Palacio, particularly in the Pedro IV halls, with an official inauguration planned for December 4, 2024, and public access commencing the following day.
The financial underpinnings of the exhibition stem from a collaborative effort involving the Cortes de Aragón and the Government of Aragón, amounting to a total investment of 774,000 euros. The Cortes will contribute 511,000 euros, while the regional government will provide 263,000 euros.
Marta Fernández, president of the Cortes de Aragón, emphasized the exhibition’s importance, stating that it symbolizes a union between two cultural icons of substantial relevance and represents the finest of Aragón and Spain. Moreover, the exhibition is anticipated to significantly enhance tourism in Zaragoza, where the Palacio de la Aljafería is the second most visited monument.
The «Goya, del Museo al Palacio» exhibition not only affords public access to Goya’s art during the Museo de Zaragoza’s renovations but also highlights the cultural and historical significance of both Goya and the Palacio de la Aljafería, setting a precedent for future cultural endeavors in the region.
