Shenghe to Invest 25 Million Euros in Pedrola to Boost Battery Industry Recycling Plant

Aragón adds a new industrial project linked to the circular economy and the development of the battery sector. The company Shenghe, through its subsidiary Veranova Technology, will invest €25 million in the construction of a plant in Pedrola (Zaragoza), which is expected to create up to one hundred jobs.

The facility will occupy a plot of up to 20,000 square meters in the El Pradillo industrial park. According to information provided by the Government of Aragón, construction will begin in the coming months, and the company expects the plant to be operational by 2028.

The project will focus on the recycling of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a solvent used in battery manufacturing. The plant will allow for the recovery of this industrial waste, subject it to a purification process, and then return it to the production process for reuse.

The expected capacity reaches 100,000 tons of NMP per year, a scale that takes the project beyond mere waste management and directly links it to the industrial chain associated with battery manufacturing.

From industrial waste to productive resource

The process that Shenghe plans to develop in Pedrola combines gas recovery, high-purity distillation—above 99.92%—and the subsequent industrial reuse of the material.

The technology will aim, according to project data, to reduce waste and emissions, decrease the need for virgin raw materials, and enhance energy efficiency. The system also envisions a heat recovery of over 80%.

This approach aligns with one of the fundamental principles of the circular economy: to ensure that materials which could previously become waste return to the productive cycle and partially replace the consumption of new resources.

In this case, its significance is also related to the sector in which it will be applied. Batteries have become a strategic component for the electrification of mobility, energy storage, and the development of renewable energy, driving new industrial investments across their entire value chain in Europe.

A company in international expansion

Shenghe Energy Technology Co. was founded in 2009 and focuses on the recycling of solvents and the research of new materials related to sustainability.

The company currently has twelve international subsidiaries, with a presence in markets such as Spain, Hungary, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. It also operates three production centers in China and another in Indonesia that began operating this year.

The future facility in Pedrola will join this international network and be part of the company’s global expansion strategy.

Its arrival simultaneously adds a new piece to the Aragonese industrial landscape related to electrification, energy storage, and clean technologies. The challenge going forward will be to ensure that investments of this type do not operate in isolation, but instead contribute to generating suppliers, knowledge, specialized jobs, and new business opportunities around a value chain that is gaining increasing industrial importance in Europe.
