Zaragoza Presents Toyota Mirai and Hilux FCEV at Hydrogen Event

Hydrogen took center stage at an event held Wednesday in Zaragoza, where the Toyota Mirai and the Toyota Hilux FCEV prototype were unveiled. The gathering focused on the use of fuel-cell technology in mobility and the lack of refueling infrastructure needed to expand the technology.

Toyota Mirai and Hilux FCEV showcase hydrogen mobility in Zaragoza

The Aragon regional government’s minister for Environment and Tourism, Luis Biendicho, closed the presentation of both vehicles at the El Cisne service station, located next to Zaragoza Airport. The event was organized by Toyota España and Grupo Zoilo Ríos.

The event provided an opportunity to learn about the applications of fuel-cell technology in transportation. Attendees also took part in a test drive of the Toyota Mirai, one of the hydrogen-powered vehicles on display.

Representatives of the Department of Environment and Tourism attended the event, including the director general for Environmental Quality, José Montoya, and the director of the Teruel Provincial Service, Emilio Pérez. Representatives of Toyota España, Grupo Zoilo Ríos, ARPA, Fundación Hidrógeno, CaetanoBus and Zaragoza City Council also attended.

Aragon sees renewable hydrogen as an energy and industrial opportunity

In his remarks, Biendicho highlighted Aragon’s potential to produce and distribute renewable hydrogen. He cited renewable-energy generation capacity, the industrial base and the characteristics of a large and diverse territory as favorable factors.

The minister advocated a transition based on technology neutrality and freedom of choice, with solutions tailored to citizens, companies and regions. He also stressed that innovation must move forward without mandates.

Biendicho said hydrogen “is not a distant prospect” and described it as an opportunity to generate economic activity and jobs in the region. His remarks also came against a backdrop in which, he said, diesel prices are “suffocating” professionals and private individuals.

Hydrogen refueling network is the main challenge to deployment

The availability of an adequate hydrogen refueling and distribution network emerged as one of the main challenges to expanding fuel-cell mobility. The event addressed the infrastructure needs accompanying the arrival of these vehicles.

Biendicho underscored the need for cooperation between public authorities and businesses to drive that rollout. The presentation in Zaragoza thus served to showcase practical hydrogen applications and put forward the conditions needed to develop this energy alternative in Aragon.
