Boehringer Ingelheim to Invest 48.4 Billion Yen in Japan

German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim committed to invest 48.4 billion yen in 2025 to expand its manufacturing plant in Yamagata Prefecture, eastern Japan. The facility produces treatments for diabetes, kidney disease, and other chronic conditions.

The information appears in Reuters Plus content produced for Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. According to the publication, the company views the Yamagata plant as an important hub for supplying both the Japanese market and other countries across Asia and Oceania. The company attributed the decision to the site’s productivity, international competitiveness, and manufacturing capabilities.

The content states that the new production building in Yamagata was completed in June 2025. It does not provide a disbursement schedule or specify how much of the 48.4 billion yen had been spent at the time of publication, meaning the figure represents the investment commitment announced by the company.

Boehringer Ingelheim also operates a pharmaceutical research institute in Kobe that is integrated into its global drug-discovery network. Marc Hasson, president of Nippon Boehringer Ingelheim, said Japan serves as an innovation and manufacturing hub for the group because of its scientific capabilities, industrial expertise, and access to high-quality health data.

Reuters notes that its newsroom was not involved in producing the content, which was created by Reuters Plus, its branded marketing studio.
