A Delicious Autumn Getaway to the Ebro Delta

The arrival of fall is a particularly special time for the lands and towns neighboring the Ebro River’s mouth. Throughout October, the rice-growing cycle reaches its culmination with the harvest of some 130,000 tons of the grain. Fields that have remained flooded in recent months begin to change color, completely transforming the landscape of the delta plain.

More than 20,000 hectares are devoted to this crop, and nearly three-quarters produce rice with the Ebro Delta Designation of Origin. This product carries the flavor of several Spanish provinces, as the Ebro runs for more than 900 kilometers, from the Cantabrian coast to the Mediterranean.

It is a long journey through seven autonomous communities: Cantabria, Castile and León, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon and Catalonia. In all of them, its waters are a source of wealth and energy, enriching the river flow with new sediment.

The Ebro Delta Natural Park is Catalonia’s largest protected aquatic area. The region offers culinary experiences, natural wealth and a range of activities, including birdwatching, thanks to its abundant birdlife.

Those wishing to enjoy the river can take boat tours that offer the chance to discover places such as Buda Island. There are also countless trails ideal for cycling or walking.

Finally, the Ebro Delta is renowned for its cuisine, with rice featured in a wide variety of dishes alongside distinctive seafood and fish.
