Zaragoza Begins Bicycle Lane Construction Between La Almozara and Delicias

The city reinforces its commitment to sustainable transportation with the construction of a new 1.4-kilometer cycling route through the La Almozara neighborhood, funded by European funds from the NextGeneration Recovery Plan.

The city of Zaragoza advances in its sustainable mobility strategy with the start of works on a new bike lane that will connect Plaza Europa with the Delicias neighborhood, passing through the La Almozara district. The infrastructure, which is 1.4 kilometers long and involves an investment of 440,646 euros, was presented this Monday by the Councilor for Environment and Mobility of the City Council of Zaragoza, Tatiana Gaudes, and the General Director of Transport of the Government of Aragón, David Sánchez.

The route will run along Pablo Gargallo and Puerta Sancho avenues, as well as Fray José Casanova street, until it reaches Avenida de Navarra, thereby facilitating a direct cycling connection between densely populated neighborhoods and key areas of the city. This project is coordinated by the Zaragoza Area Transport Consortium (CTAZ) and financed with European funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience NextGenerationEU Plan.

“This long-awaited bike lane is finally going to be a reality. It will generate a new connection that was necessary and that I am sure will be a success, as it will complete the integration of the cycling paths in the southwest area of the city,” declared Gaudes. “It is almost a kilometer and a half, but in reality, it will be much more, as it will link all the existing cycling network on the Left Bank (via the Almozara Bridge) and on the banks of the Ebro River, as well as with the bike lane on Paseo María Agustín. And these, in turn, with Delicias through Avenida de Navarra,” she added.

For his part, David Sánchez emphasized the importance of this new infrastructure within the urban cycling network: “It will allow the mesh of bike lanes in the city of Zaragoza to permeate even further, connecting important neighborhoods and promoting the use of bicycles for urban commuting, providing safety to cyclists and traversing La Almozara via some of its most important avenues, such as Puerta Sancho and Pablo Gargallo, where sustainable transportation will gain ground thanks to this investment from the Zaragoza Area Transport Consortium with over 440,000 euros.”

The bike lane will be bidirectional, with a width of between 2.5 and 3 meters, and will be segregated from vehicular traffic by a 45-centimeter strip marked with black and white “armadillo” safety elements. In the section of Pablo Gargallo avenue, an independent pedestrian zone will also be established, to facilitate access to parked vehicles and improve coexistence between cars and bicycles.

This new section is part of a broader urban transformation strategy led by Zaragoza and the Government of Aragón. Among the recent or ongoing projects financed by the same European funds are the bike lanes on Pedro III, Fray José Casanova, Pablo Picasso avenue, and the future section between Zaragoza and Utebo through Miralbueno. All these actions align with the sustainability, public health, and emission reduction goals promoted by both the European Union and local administrations.

The new lane not only represents a concrete improvement for bike commuting but also demonstrates a clear commitment to a healthier, more accessible, and resilient urban model. Zaragoza, recognized for its advanced planning in sustainable mobility, continues to build an integrated network that prioritizes pedestrians and non-polluting means of transport, reinforcing its role as a leading city in southern Europe.
