Aragon’s Cheese Sector Seeks Strength in Producer Unity

The Aragonese Academy of Gastronomy brings together professionals and experts to examine the challenges facing a sector focused on quality, differentiation, and greater business collaboration to improve its competitiveness.

Aragon’s cheese sector faces the challenge of strengthening its market presence and capitalizing on the potential of products closely tied to the region. The need for greater collaboration among producers, quality-based differentiation, and improved commercial promotion were among the issues addressed at an event held in Zaragoza.

One of the key proposals raised at the meeting was the potential revival of the Aragon Cheese Producers Association as a vehicle for industry representation and business cooperation.

Quality and origin as competitive advantages

Aragon’s cheese production accounts for a small share of Spain’s overall output. Participants noted during the event that Aragon represents approximately 1% of Spanish cheese production. This context poses challenges in terms of recognition and market positioning.

Participants emphasized the importance of building a recognizable identity for Aragonese cheeses, underpinned by the quality of raw materials, production processes, and ties to the region.

An activity linked to rural development

Cheese production is directly linked to livestock farming and opportunities for agri-food processing in rural areas. Cheese dairies can help diversify economic activity and support the continuity of small business ventures.

Cooperation among producers emerged as one of the central issues in advancing the sector’s development.
