The Government of Aragón has initiated the renovation works on the Water Tower, an emblematic building from the 2008 International Exposition, with the goal of transforming it into the Logistics Lighthouse. This project, led by the public company Expo Zaragoza Empresarial, aims to revitalize the building and adapt it to current needs.
Investment Details and Timeline
The intervention in the Water Tower involves an investment of 6 million euros and a execution period of 12 months, with completion expected by January 2027. This initiative will not only restore the building’s splendor after eighteen years of operation but will also end a period of underutilization, restoring its significance in the urban landscape.
Key Areas of Intervention
The works are divided into two main categories: the repair of structural issues and compliance adjustments, and renovations for new services. Regarding the former, efforts will focus on repairing minor issues, reviewing installations, and adapting the building to regulations in force since 2008. The renovations will include the installation of an observation deck on the roof, improvements in the dining area, and the development of multifunctional rooms on the ground floor.
The repair of the building’s exterior will be crucial, involving the replacement of deteriorated elements and a thorough cleaning of oxides over a surface area of approximately 9,000 m². Additionally, a glass observation deck will be constructed to provide 360-degree panoramic access, and the panoramic elevators will be upgraded to comply with current safety standards.
Impact and Future Vision
Upon completion of the works, the Water Tower will become a hub for the new business and tourism landscape of Zaragoza. The transformation will include centralized smart management systems and a new exterior lighting infrastructure that will turn the tower into a dynamic visual beacon. This change will allow for a more personal and intimate continuous experience, setting it apart from the mass experience encountered during the 2008 exposition.
