Aragón positions itself at the forefront of artistic conservation with the launch of the only master’s program in mural painting restoration in Spain, scheduled to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year. This initiative, led by the Government of Aragón and the Provincial Council of Huesca, aims to train highly specialized professionals in the conservation and restoration of artistic heritage, a field that requires advanced technical and scientific knowledge.
Specialized training in artistic conservation
The Master’s in Advanced Systems in Conservation and Restoration of Mural Painting will be offered by the Higher School of Conservation and Restoration of Aragón (ESCYRA). This official degree, within higher artistic education, focuses on the technical and scientific intervention on historical and contemporary mural painting, providing a highly practical approach with a strong territorial connection. The training is designed to equip students with the necessary tools to undertake restoration projects with a comprehensive and contextualized approach.
Artistic heritage in the heart of Huesca
The academic program of the master’s includes the study and intervention in pictorial ensembles in the province of Huesca, highlighting emblematic sites such as the Cartuja de Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes, known for its cycle of Baroque mural painting, and the Ermita de los Dolores, a notable example of medieval mural painting. Additionally, it incorporates contemporary urban mural art from Grañén. These locations will not only serve as practical learning environments but will also contribute to the revitalization and preservation of Huesca’s cultural heritage.
A master’s aligned with European standards
The master’s program aligns with the regulations of Non-University Higher Education and is equivalent to a university master’s degree, meeting the criteria of the European Higher Education Area and achieving MECES level 3. The main objective is to consolidate educational structures that promote quality training and reinforce territorial roots in Huesca, encouraging students to contribute to the cultural and social development of the region. With this program, Aragón not only advances in training experts in restoration but also strengthens its commitment to the protection of artistic heritage.
