Aragón Leads Pilot for Autonomous Heavy Vehicle Driving in Southern Europe
The Government of Aragón, the company IVECO, and the firm Sesé signed a collaboration agreement on December 2, 2025, at the Zaragoza Logistics Platform (PLAZA). The agreement will establish the framework to develop the first pilot project for autonomous heavy vehicle driving in Southern Europe. This initiative has been described as revolutionary due to its integration of three key sectors: automotive, logistics, and technology.
The project aims for two Level 4 autonomous heavy vehicles (autonomous driving with a driver supervising on board) to operate on the Zaragoza-Madrid highway by 2028. A testing schedule is planned between 2026 and 2027, focusing on system calibration, safety, and technological validation. During the second half of 2028, the vehicles will progressively carry out the Zaragoza-Madrid route under expert technical supervision.
The initiative seeks to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%, promoting more efficient and sustainable transportation. It also aims to enhance road safety through advanced autonomous driving systems and to optimize the costs of the supply chain.
The Technological Institute of Aragón (ITA) and Technopark Motorland will participate in the development and pilot phases. IVECO, with prior experience in platooning and autonomous driving projects, contributes its technological expertise. Sesé will continue its strategy of digitalization and comprehensive automation of the supply chain through this collaboration.
