His name is Guilherme Guimarães Peixoto; he is a Catholic priest and Portuguese. So far, everything is normal. But this priest does not only celebrate Mass or accompany processions: he also spins electronic music in front of thousands of young people. He is known as the «DJ Priest,» and in just a few years, he has become a phenomenon both inside and outside the Church.
His fame skyrocketed after the World Youth Day held in Lisbon in 2023. There, in front of a crowd, he offered a DJ set at dawn that surprised even those who had no connection to religion. Hundreds of thousands of young people followed him live. His image, arms raised to the sky with his cassock waving to the rhythm of the beats, went viral.
But his story did not begin there. For years, he has balanced his pastoral work with his other passion: music. In Portugal, he serves as a parish priest and also as a military chaplain. At the same time, he uses electronic music as a tool to reach out to young people. «I am still a priest when I am a DJ. I just change the language to speak to the world,” he has stated.
In his sets, he mixes electronic beats with messages of hope, excerpts from homilies, and prayers. His goal is not spectacle but connection, building community, and breaking down prejudices. And it seems to be working. Young people who are not attracted to traditional liturgy listen to him, follow him, and understand him.
