August in Comics: Dolmen Editorial’s Latest News

The Mallorcan publishing house presents an electrifying month with Judge Dredd, Prince Valiant, and the secrets of Café Calor.

With the heat of summer, Dolmen Editorial launches a collection of titles that shake the shelves of bookstores. From the return of zombies with Judge Dredd to the medieval lyricism of Prince Valiant, and the social critique of the graphic novel Café Calor, August is packed with stories that ignite the imagination and stir the conscience.

Dredd and Johnny Alpha: relentless justice against the living dead

One of the great jewels of the month is Judgment Day, a saga that brings together two titans of British comics: Judge Dredd and Johnny Alpha, the Strontium Dog. With a script by Garth Ennis (The Boys, Punisher) and art by the legendary Carlos Ezquerra, this deluxe edition is a feast for fans of post-apocalyptic action comics.

The necromagus Sabbat has unleashed an army of zombies that ravage the mega-cities of the future. Only the alliance between Dredd and Alpha can halt the plague. With a frantic pace, vibrant graphic style, and dialogue loaded with cynicism, this cult work originally published in 2000 AD now becomes a reference for followers of the most radical European comics.

The legend continues: Prince Valiant and his battle against fate

For fans of classic adventure, Dolmen recovers a new installment of Prince Valiant (1981-1982), illustrated by John Cullen Murphy with a script by his son Cullen Murphy. In this volume, Valiant must return home to stop Modred’s advance over Britain, while his sons Arn and Galán embark on missions that will forge them into future knights.

With an elegant line, detailed compositions, and a narrative that blends epic and intimacy, the series continues to captivate readers of all ages. Each panel is a window into a dreamed medieval world, where the sword is accompanied by nobility and courage.

Café Calor: when summer burns from within

One of the surprises of the month is undoubtedly Café Calor, a graphic novel by Bernat Bauzá, awarded the ArtJove Cultural Award 2024. This work combines Mediterranean noir with sharp social criticism.

Set in a tourist city that hides behind its postcard facade a web of corruption, drugs, and prostitution, the story follows David, a young police officer who begins to pull on a dangerous thread after a mysterious fire. Illustrated in a sober and expressive style, Café Calor is a tale that hurts and captivates.

Also available in Catalan, Dolmen offers this work as an example of its commitment to emerging talent and socially significant themes.

Terror, nostalgia, and superpower-wielding women: packs for collectors

This August, Dolmen also launches two must-have packs for nostalgic readers and fans of the fantasy genre:

  • The Thirteenth Floor (Complete Pack, €49.90): This classic of British comics, by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and José Ortiz, collects all three volumes of the series in a single edition.

  • Esther and Her World – Green Series (vols. 4 and 5, €20): The legendary Purita Campos returns with new adventures of Esther Lucas. Ideal for those who grew up with her stories.

Dolmen 366: a month with a taste of Ennis

This month’s Dolmen magazine pays tribute to Garth Ennis, coinciding with his participation in the upcoming Comic Days of Avilés. Through interviews and analyses of his works, this issue provides a fascinating journey through one of the most incisive writers in contemporary comics.
