The Pastores Foundation has launched in La Borda de Pastores the first thematic escape room focused on traditional pastoralism. Under the title “The Last Inhabitant”, this immersive experience combines entertainment with environmental and rural education, aiming to raise awareness about an alarming reality: the gradual abandonment of sheep farming in Spain.
The game presents a disturbingly close fiction. In a village in the Pyrenees, the last flock of sheep has mysteriously disappeared. Players, in teams of two to six people, must collaborate with a shepherdess to solve puzzles and recover the flock. In the process, they will discover the essential role of sheep in ecological balance, biodiversity, fire prevention, and the survival of the rural world.
“We want people to understand, through playing, what is at stake,” say the Foundation. The escape room is part of the European project BEEP (Bioeconomy for Strengthening Pastoralism in the Pyrenees) and has been designed by the Aragonese company Cat2Heory, which has worked for over a year with experts in the field.
Sessions are available on Sunday afternoons, with the possibility of reserving private games at other times. Prices range from 16 to 25 euros, depending on the number of participants, and there is an option to add a rustic dinner with local products, such as Ternasco de Aragón IGP.
This summer, every Friday evening, La Borda de Pastores will also host “Cool Evenings”, a unique tourist experience that fuses gastronomy, popular theater, and oral tradition. It includes a guided visit to the Sheep Museum, a dinner-snack with local specialties, and a scenic walk led by the endearing “Grandma Marieta,” who recites legends of Pyrenean shepherds under the branches of a century-old oak.
Both activities require prior booking through www.labordadepastores.com, and are designed to attract families, cultural travelers, and nature lovers alike.
In an era marked by rural depopulation and climate emergency, these initiatives seek to connect the past with the present, reminding us that protecting the rural world is also protecting our common future.
Institutional Context
This initiative is part of the BEEP project (Bioeconomy for Strengthening Pastoralism in the Pyrenees), funded by Next Generation funds. The project aims to promote public-private collaboration models to enhance the environmental services of extensive livestock farming in the provinces of Huesca and Lleida. Participants include the Provincial Council of Huesca, the IPE-CSIC, and the Pastores Foundation.
La Borda de Pastores
La Borda de Pastores is a center for the interpretation of sheep farming located in a rehabilitated homestead in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The center includes a rural hotel, a dining area, a museum, livestock areas, and spaces dedicated to recreational and educational activities.
The game «The Last Inhabitant» and the related activities seek to reinforce the role of sheep farming as a socio-economic driver for rural areas, promoting its cultural and environmental value through interactive experiences.
