More than 100 European experts gather in Zaragoza to discuss the future of sustainable mobility
The II Spanish Congress on Mobility Research has commenced at Mobility City, with the participation of researchers from across Europe presenting 30 different lines of research in the sector. The event, organized by Ibercaja Foundation, University of Zaragoza, San Jorge University, and CSIC, spans two days and is focused on showcasing the latest research, innovations, and studies that are shaping the transformation of mobility.
The gathering brings together over 100 European researchers addressing four main topics: cities and infrastructure, society and environment, new vehicles, and energy and materials. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Government of Aragon, the Zaragoza City Council, CSIC, and the organizing universities.
The first day began with a lecture by Marta González, a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Urban Planning at the University of Berkeley. Under the title «Towards a Science of Cities: A Complex Systems Approach», the speaker presented a study analyzing flows and mobility in vehicles according to the city’s urban planning through geolocations.
During her presentation, she emphasized the importance of data and mobile technology to simulate the mobility of the future, as well as referring to «15-minute cities,» an urban model aimed at ensuring that residents can access all essential services within that maximum time, either by bicycle or on foot.
Development of the first day
Cities and infrastructure: The studies presented analyzed current urban mobility, addressing concepts such as environmental sensorization, pedestrian safety, accessibility, and the use of open data to optimize city planning and management.
Society and environment: This panel focused on the role of mobility in social transformation and its environmental influence. From a multidisciplinary approach, the effects on social justice and vulnerability were discussed, as well as the environmental impact of current transport models, cultural factors in the adoption of new mobility forms, and governance models for sustainable mobility.
Program for the second day
The continuation of the congress will address «energy and materials» and «new vehicles and innovation.» The first panel will explore new propulsion technologies and non-critical materials, analyzing advantages, disadvantages, and barriers to their implementation, with a special focus on alternative fuels, circular economy applied to mobility, and the energy impact of recycling.
The second block will present studies on electric and autonomous vehicles, decision software, signal datasets for smart mobility, virtual road simulation, artificial vision applied to infrastructure, and future urban electromobility scenarios.
Consolidation as a reference event
The II Spanish Congress on Mobility Research consolidates itself as a reference meeting point for researchers, institutions, and professionals, capable of providing solutions to the major challenges of mobility through science and collaboration. Mobility City once again positions itself as a key place to address, discuss, and present the latest advancements and innovations in mobility.
