The Regional Minister of Education, Culture, and Sports of the Government of Aragón, Tomasa Hernández, visited the Segeda Public Special Education Center in Calatayud, accompanied by the mayor, José Manuel Aranda. During the visit, Hernández highlighted the Aragón Executive’s commitment to special education and announced expansion works to meet the needs of the educational center.
The Department has formalized the contract for the drafting of the expansion project, at a cost of 60,703.28 euros (including VAT) and with an execution period of 60 days. The works are scheduled to begin in 2026 and conclude in the second quarter of 2027, with a total estimated budget of 1,886,269 euros.
The Segeda Special Education Center was established by decree in 2015 by splitting from the Augusta Bílbilis Early Childhood and Primary Education School. It currently has six classrooms and serves students aged between 3 and 24 with varying levels of support needs. The center offers Compulsory Basic Education (EBO), Training for the Transition to Adult Life (FTVA), and Special Initial Qualification Programs (PCIE). It currently has 50 students, having originally been built for 25.
The expansion includes the construction of four additional classrooms and the expansion of complementary spaces: multisensory rooms, physiotherapy rooms, psychomotor rooms, a porch, adapted restrooms, and changing rooms. Energy efficiency strategies and safety measures against flood risks will be incorporated. The works will be carried out while the center is operational. The responsible architect indicated that a future third phase is planned to elevate the new construction by an additional floor, considering the potential growth of the center.
