The President of the Government of Aragón, Jorge Azcón, participated on Wednesday in the ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone of the battery gigafactory in Figueruelas, promoted by Stellantis and CATL. During the event, Azcón emphasized that the project «will transform the economy of Aragón» with an impact that goes beyond immediate economic effects.
Azcón described the initiative as «a completely differential, pioneering, and cutting-edge project at a continental level.» He highlighted that, in contrast to closures and difficulties in factories in other countries, Aragón will receive an investment of over 4.1 billion euros which «will change the economy of our autonomous community and secure the future of the sector in our land.»
The president expressed his recognition of the workers at Stellantis and CATL, whose competitiveness and performance allowed for the joint venture to come to fruition. He recalled the historic moment when the first vehicle rolled out of the General Motors plant in Figueruelas more than forty years ago, describing it as «a turning point for Aragón and Spain.»
The industrial establishment begun more than forty years ago created an ecosystem in which 35,000 families live from the automobile industry in Aragón. The new gigafactory will generate employment in two phases: during construction, 7,000 jobs (direct, indirect, and induced) will be created, and once fully operational, 4,300 sustainable jobs will be maintained.
Azcón underlined the importance of «close collaboration between the different administrations,» considering it crucial given the magnitude of this industrial investment, which he described as «the most important being made in Spain.»
