The Government of Aragon has announced the opening of the Goya Center in Zaragoza for the first half of 2027. It will be located in the former courthouse building in Plaza del Pilar and will be integrated as a section of the Museum of Zaragoza.
The new Goya Center will be an exhibition and multisensory space dedicated to the figure and work of Francisco de Goya. Its inauguration is scheduled for before the summer of 2027, as part of the events commemorating the bicentennial of the Aragonese painter’s death, which will be celebrated in 2028.
The center will occupy the former courthouse building, which has been unused for more than a decade. The building will be renovated to house five floors of museum facilities with a total usable area of 2,433 square meters. The ground floor will have a reception area, cloakroom, and restrooms. The first floor will house offices and technical areas, while the upper floors will be used for exhibitions.
The second floor will function as a multipurpose room and space connecting with the square. The third floor will host temporary exhibitions. The fourth and fifth floors will house a permanent exhibition focusing on the artist’s life and work. A sensory space called “Quinta de Goya” will also be installed, offering an immersive experience.
The architectural and museographic project aims to integrate contemporary elements with the original architecture of the building. Outside, a light installation will transform the roof of the porches into a digital screen inspired by Goya, while the main façade will incorporate LED screens that will project the artist’s works.
The total estimated investment is around seven million euros. The transformation work will begin in late 2025, with the aim of having the center fully operational during the first half of 2027.
