Holy Week in Teruel: A Living Tradition at the Heart of the City

The Holy Week in Teruel, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest, is one of those celebrations that does not require tricks to leave an impression. There are no overcrowded stages here, but rather something much more difficult to achieve: authenticity. For a few days, the city shifts its rhythm and allows itself to be carried away by a tradition that is part of its identity.

Although its origins date back several centuries, with brotherhoods that already existed in the 15th century, the most interesting aspect is not so much the history as the continuity. The Holy Week is not something that is remembered; it is something that remains alive. More than 2,500 members, distributed among eight brotherhoods and associations, actively participate each year, a very significant number in a city of about 37,000 inhabitants like Teruel.

Eight Brotherhoods with Their Own Identity

The eight brotherhoods and associations that shape the Holy Week in Teruel are the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Villa Vieja and the Blood of Christ, the Brotherhood of the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the Brotherhood of the Prayer in the Garden, the Brotherhood of Jesus Bound to the Column and Our Lady of Hope, the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Our Lady of the Rosary, the Brotherhood of the Sacred Descent and Most Holy Mary of Sorrows, the Brotherhood of Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and Christ of Love, and the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Solitude. Each has its own personality, its way of taking to the streets, and its understanding of tradition, but all are part of the same whole.

The historic center, with its narrow streets and spaces like Plaza del Torico, makes everything experienced up close. There is no distance between the participant and the observer, and that is part of its charm.

The Retreta, the Sound That Fills Everything

One of the most characteristic moments is the retreta, which takes place on Saturday, the eve of Palm Sunday, in Plaza del Torico. It is one of those acts that truly encapsulate the atmosphere of Holy Week in Teruel. It is not a procession, but rather a gathering where music takes center stage.

Participating are the brotherhoods and associations of the city, along with seven drum and bass associations: the Representation of Drums and Bass of Samper de Calanda, Pinacle, Diletantes, the Cultural Association Casa del Tambor, the Quadrilla of Death, the Cultural Association Ciudad Mudéjar, and Drums and Bass El Tórico. The result is a very special atmosphere, with the square transformed into a space where the sound of the drums and bass envelops everything.

Processions and Events Throughout the Week

From there, the program unfolds throughout the week with a succession of events that combine tradition and solemnity. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the major days with the blessing of palms and branches at different points in the city, followed by the procession of the Brotherhood of the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The day begins at the La Salle School and continues to the Church of San José, where the mass is held, and then continues in procession to the Church of San Martín. On that same day, the Brotherhood of the Sacred Descent also participates with a retreta through various streets of the city and liturgical acts at the Church of Milagrosa.

Holy Monday kicks off with the procession of Condemnation, organized by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Villa Vieja and the Blood of Christ. The route starts from the Church of San Martín and passes through points such as Plaza del Seminario, Plaza de la Catedral, or Plaza de la Marquesa, in an act that combines procession and moments of prayer.

On the same day, the Brotherhood of the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden celebrates various acts, beginning with a holy mass at the Church of San León Magno, followed by the Touch of Remembrance, and then the Transfer procession, which takes place from this church to San Martín.

Pentitential Acts and Double Night Procession on Tuesday

Holy Tuesday includes the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral and a penitential celebration at the Church of the Milagrosa. By night, the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Our Lady of the Rosary leads the procession of the Holy Step, with a wide route through the city center that includes main squares and streets. Later, the Brotherhood of Jesus Bound to the Column and Our Lady of Hope concludes the day with the procession of Good Hope.

Holy Wednesday features as its main event the Day of the Three Petitions to Our Father Jesus Nazarene, celebrated at the Church of Merced, followed soon after at midnight by the Procession of Silence, one of the most overwhelming moments, with a route that crosses much of the historic center until it ends at Plaza del Seminario.

Holy Thursday: Solemnity and General Procession

Holy Thursday combines musical, liturgical, and processional acts. It features a sacred music concert at the Cathedral and the celebrations of the «In Cena Domini» mass at different churches. In the evening, Holy Hours are held in various temples, and as the central act, the General Procession of Holy Thursday travels through the city center with the participation of numerous brotherhoods. Later, the Brotherhood of the Sacred Descent leads the Via Crucis procession through various streets of the historic center.

Good Friday is the Central Day

Good Friday begins very early with the Indulto procession, which heads to the penitentiary center. Throughout the morning, acts such as the procession and adoration of the Holy Cross, the traditional Breaking of the Hour at Plaza del Torico, and various Via Crucis and religious celebrations take place. In the afternoon, the Holy Offices are held in different churches and, as the central act, the General Procession of Good Friday takes place, with all brotherhoods and associations participating. The day concludes with a nighttime Via Crucis.

Holy Saturday keeps the activity alive with acts such as the floral offering at Plaza del Cristo Rey and at the cemetery, as well as a concert and the theatrical representation of «The Son of Man,» which takes place in different venues around the center. At night, the Brotherhood of Solitude leads the procession of Solitude and the Besamanos, followed by a retreta in Plaza de la Catedral.

Easter Sunday: The Closure with the Meeting

Holy Week concludes on Easter Sunday with the procession of the Resurrected, which departs from the Church of San Martín and heads to the Cathedral, where the Resurrection mass is celebrated. Subsequently, the procession continues to Plaza del Torico, where the meeting with the Virgin takes place and the closure of the…
