The archaeological site of the Círculo Católico in Huesca is preparing for a significant transformation following the call for bids for its restoration and conditioning. With a projected investment of €993,788.40, the project aims not only to preserve this important historical site but also to make it accessible to the public within a twelve-month period.
Funding and Institutional Collaboration
The funding for the project is a joint effort between the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports of the Government of Aragón, which contributes 55% of the funds, and the 2% Cultural Program of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, which provides the remaining 45%. This collaboration reflects the commitment of both institutions to the preservation of cultural heritage. In 2023, the Government of Aragón acquired the premises to ensure the protection of the site, emphasizing its interest in preserving this historical legacy.
Archaeological Significance of the Site
Designated as a cultural asset in February 2021, the site of the Círculo Católico is a testament to the rich history of Huesca. Excavations carried out between 1991 and 2006 have revealed continuous occupation from the Iberian-Roman period to the Modern Age. Among the most notable findings are Roman roadways, remnants of a temple in antis, and a domus with mosaic decorations, in addition to modifications from the Islamic period. These discoveries offer a unique insight into the historical evolution of the region.
Objectives of the Restoration
The main objective of the works is to prepare the space to ensure the protection and conservation of the site, allowing its opening to the public under suitable conditions. Plans include the adaptation of a ground floor area to facilitate access and enhance the visitor experience. With the deadline for bid submissions set for January 27, 2026, this project represents an opportunity to revitalize the cultural and tourist interest in Huesca.
